Michael Bates, 3D artist and animator

Inkspot3d.com is the consultancy for Michael Bates, 3D artist and animator. A graduate of the prestigious Art Institute of Colorado at Denver (BFA in Media Arts and Animation), Mike has acquired skill with a variety of specialized 3D tools, as well as experience with the Adobe Creative Suite of graphic tools.

During the early years of his life Mike was interested in martial arts and has dedicated more than 15 years to Universal Kempo Karate, earning a black belt in 1999. He graduated early from high school and worked with a landscaping company and later with a construction company, gaining a thorough understanding of landscape design, decorative plantings, architecture and building construction.

Mike has always had an interest in cars and mechanical devices. When the engine overheated and warped the head in his Ford Taurus, he replaced the engine himself (armed only with a mechanic's manual and tool kit.) The love of mechanics has pushed him to create plausible motorcycle designs, and acquire greater depth of knowledge to apply to product pre-visualization.

More than a decade ago he also decided to learn the skill of blade-smithing. After considerable experimentation, as well a large amount of research in the public library and online, he built a working forge and began learning the skill. To date he has made cable Damascus blades, swords, knives and bladed instruments, as well as ornamental wrought iron pieces.

3D Modeling

Mike began using 3D software at an early age, beginning with Visual Reality™ in 1996. Due to his father’s role in various multimedia productions, he was exposed to a broad range of 3D and multimedia tools. After playing early video games that made extensive use of 3D graphics, he decided to pursue a career that combined the things he enjoyed the most: video games and 3D modeling. More than ten years later he enrolled in the Media Arts and Animation course at the Art Institute of Denver, receiving his Bachelors of Fine Arts at the start of 2009.
